I just learned that Senator Mike Parson (R-Polk) will be filing a state constitutional amendment tomorrow that if adopted by We the People, would establish if a Missouri legislator flees the state in dereliction of his/her duties, that legislator will forfeit their office. If this were in place in Wisconsin, the state could do the people’s business. As it stands now, that business is being stymied by derelict legislators.
Look for more information on this bill later this week.
sounds good—BUT–what if it were a legislature like we’ve had in DC 2009-2010–where the people overwhelmingly said NO and the legislature overruled and passed anyway.
Is this swinging the pendulum too far the other direction??
I don’t think so. The elected officials’ job is to vote. They stay and use all parliamentary means possible. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. Here in Missouri, we have the ability to do initiative petitions & referendums. We the People can perform a check & balance on out of control legislatures.
