Senator Luann Ridgeway presented Senate Committee Substitute (SCS) for Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 1 to the Missouri Senate Ways and Means Committee last week. One of the witnesses in support of SCS SJR1 was Beverly Thomas, County Commissioner from Camden County.
Commissioner Thomas spoke about how she believed the tax reform proposal represented by SCS SJR1 would be beneficial to local governments while maintaining revenue neutrality. She also spoke to her firsthand experience of how a very similar model has worked well for Tennessee making them a vibrant – growing state.
Many local government officials are only being given one side of the tax reform story – the negative side which is usually replete with false or misleading statements regarding the proposal. Commissioner Thomas decided to see for herself what this proposal was about and was determined to see the “rest of the story” not just some it! Here is her testimony:
