The tragic and unthinkable shootings over the weekend are horrendous and inexcusable. The hearts and prayers of America go out to those still in the hospital and to the families of those who lost loved ones.
One of the disturbing aspects of the horrible events is the attempt by some to lay blame on others besides the shooter. A lot of talk about “heated rhetoric” and standing down is being heard. I suppose it’s no real surprise that many in Washington, in the media and on the left indirectly if not directly blame the “right” for the shootings. There are even some who blame the left!
There is no question that the fringe on the right and the left say more than their fair share of stupid things. The problem is that some think that anyone saying things they don’t agree with are on the fringe.
However, the rush to somehow make the shooter a product or stooge of those who disagree with the current administration is beyond the pale. It’s a ludicrous accusation without any supporting evidence.
I agree that there is no place for physical threats in the political arena. But there is lots of room for disagreement. Anyone who says otherwise is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Now is the time to pray and mourn for those tragically stricken on Saturday. There will be time and opportunity enough to continue the political discourse. We must not let people use this unfortunate event for political gain by silencing their opposition on either side.
